It’s February and we are already off to a very busy start. Winter Flight 2012 is complete and has been a huge success. Lots of fun events are coming up, and it is almost time for baseball spring training. No wonder that February is my favorite month. Spring is just around the corner.

With months of planning and probably one of the largest turnouts of SRR volunteers and runners in history, Winter Flight turned out very well. We’re doing final accounting right now to see just what donation that Rowan Helping Ministries will receive from SRR. The visit by Joan Nesbit Mabe and representatives from RRCA, coupled with WF’s first time on Running Journal’s Grand Prix all helped to make the 29th edition one of the most memorable. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped on the early packet pickup and race day. I’ve helped with Winter Flight for many years, and although it has a huge reputation for organization, race day can be pretty stressful. This year things just fell into place and the club can look back on another great day, thanks to great work by club members and community partners.

Our annual meeting was just a few weeks ago, and awards for 2011 were given. The mileage club awards program celebrated the activity of close to 30 of our members. Individual awards were also given. SRR’s race directors of 2012 were Rob Holmes and Hunter Latimer for their work on Santa’s Run for Charity 5K. The Community Partner of the Year was the City of Salisbury, and Volunteer of the Year went to Rebecca Little. Male Runner of the Year is Sam Golden and the Female Runner of the Year is Meredith Abramson. Molly Connor received the Lifetime Achievement Award.  Check for a full story in an upcoming edition of Running Journal.

The mileage club is off to another great start for 2012. Sign up in February and you can count the miles beginning this month. Remember that 3 bike miles count for 1 running mile and 1 swimming mile counts for 3 running miles.

The St. Patrick’s Day 5K for the Salisbury Fire Department is coming up on March 10th. Terry Smith is race director. The following weekend, on Sunday March 18th we will partner in a fundraiser organized by SRR Vice President Steve Clark and his wife Laura. The 5K is called ‘Run for Tom’ and will benefit a teacher with a pancreatic cancer. This race will be held at Knox Middle School.  The next Saturday, March 24th, SRR will time and do results for the Millbridge Elementary 5K.

Upcoming new things for SRR include a possible involvement with Rowan County Special Olympics Track and Field Day. We also have an opportunity to work with the Wounded Warrior’s Project in May.

The current Beginning Runners Class is now in its fourth week, halfway to completion.  The next class starts in March as an evening class at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Great things continue to happen at SRR. 2012 will be an exciting year.  New and exciting opportunities offer us the chance to spread our mission of health awareness and fitness to the community.  The strength of SRR is in its members and their abilities.

Run, sweat, and smile, and all the while celebrate your blessings. There are always blessings.

          See you on the roads.
